What are some popular tourist attractions in Lisbon?

Tram 28 Ride Through Alfama: One of the most charming (and affordable) ways to see Lisbon. The vintage tram winds through narrow streets, historic neighborhoods, and scenic viewpoints.

Belém Tower & Jerónimos Monastery: Iconic landmarks tied to Portugal's Age of Discovery. The monastery is especially stunning and relatively inexpensive to enter.

Castelo de S. Jorge: Perched above the city, this historic castle offers panoramic views over Lisbon's rooftops and the Tagus River. It's a great spot to explore ancient walls and soak in the city's history.

Praça do Comércio: Lisbon's grand waterfront square, framed by elegant yellow buildings and opening onto the river. A central gathering place that's perfect for a stroll or photos.

Baixa de Lisboa: The heart of downtown Lisbon, known for its grid-like streets, shopping, cafés, and lively atmosphere. Ideal for wandering between landmarks and soaking up the city's rhythm.

Miradouros: Lisbon is full of beautiful viewpoints like Miradouro da Senhora do Monte or Santa Catarina—perfect for sunset and completely free.

Private Sailing on the Tagus River: A more high-end experience, chartering a boat at sunset offers incredible views of the city skyline and the 25 de Abril Bridge.

Quinta da Regaleira (Sintra): A magical estate filled with gardens, hidden tunnels, and the famous Initiation Well. It is located just outside Lisbon.

National Palace of Pena (Sintra): A colorful hilltop palace and one of Portugal's most iconic landmarks. Its romantic architecture and sweeping views make it a must-see, especially for a more elevated, scenic experience.

What are some favorite spots to enjoy a local meal while in Lisbon?

Cervejaria Ramiro (Intendente): A legendary seafood spot known for garlic shrimp, crab, and prego sandwiches. Lively and authentic.

Time Out Market (Cais do Sodré): A curated food hall featuring top chefs and classic Portuguese dishes.

Taberna da Rua das Flores (Chiado): Small, cozy, and highly regarded for seasonal Portuguese plates with a modern touch.

Prado (Baixa): A more contemporary, Michelin Guide restaurant focused on local, seasonal ingredients with a stylish but relaxed atmosphere.

Belcanto (Chiado): A two-Michelin-star restaurant by Chef José Avillez. A refined, high-net-worth culinary experience showcasing modern Portuguese cuisine.

Do I need cash to explore Lisbon?

Not much, but a small amount is helpful.

  • Credit cards are widely accepted. Visa and Mastercard work almost everywhere.
  • Contactless payments and Apple/Google Pay are commonly accepted in restaurants, taxis, and major stores.
  • Uber and Bolt operate in Lisbon, and rides can be paid through the app. Standard taxis often accept cards, but it's helpful to confirm before the ride.

When cash is useful:

  • Smaller neighborhood cafés or bakeries
  • Street food vendors
  • Local markets
  • Small tips (10% is common)

Carrying the equivalent of €30–50 EUR is more than sufficient for convenience.
